What’s been Happening

>>Home

The last month has seen quite a few changes here at the museum with the rearranging of exhibits, raising the Red Baron, some painting and new display cases.

Firstly, the replica of the WW1 fighter aircraft the Fokker DR1 triplane known as the “Red Baron” and flown by Baron von Richthofen has been elevated to new heights. Originally situated on the floor of the museum it has now been placed on a specially designed stand commanding a prominent view over the museum. We also have set up some electronic sound equipment enabling the aircraft to start its engine and fire its guns on the approach of a visitor.

The museum is progressively being repainted in colours, which present a much better look and feel to the overall theme of the items on display. We plan to repaint the museum over a period of time as funds permit, so if you wish to make a donation to assist us in this area please contact us using the contact details as shown on the home page.

Some of our display cabinets have been replaced with new all glass styles enabling visitors a better view of the objects on display. This has been the result of various grants received from both government and private enterprise. Our aim to to replace the majority of the cabinets as future grants become available.

The museum has also been selected as a nominee for the 2009 Business Excellence Awards. We were in the finals last year and just missed out on an award, so here’s hoping that 2009 will be the year that we make the big time.

The Milne bay Military Museum is located in a building known at “The Drill Hall”. It was first constructed in 1917 in Newtown Park, Toowoomba as a recruiting depot for the 11th Light Horse regiment.

After the ending  World War One in 1918, it became the headquarters and training depot for the 25th Battalion, the Darling downs Regiment.  the building was relocated in 1926 to the corner of Margaret and Kitchener Streets where it remained until 1990.

During those years, the 25th Battalion as well as elements of other units occupied it from time to time. It was the recruiting depot for service personnel enlisted in the armed forces during WW2 and was the home base for many Darling Downs soldiers during the national service era of the 1950’s and 60’s.

The building was from the army  in 1990 and  relocated to O’Quinn Street (it’s current location).

Today it houses an excellent collection of military memorabilia from Toowoomba and the Darling Downs with our exhibits including:

  • Replica WW1 trench
  • WW2 Vehicles
  • Women at war
  • Captured Japanese wartime souvenirs
  • The Milne Bay  Room
  • Changi

The museum is open 7 days a week from 10am to 4pm with admission being; Adult $10.00, Chidren $3.00, families $12.00. A 10% discount is offered to concession card holders
